Azerbaijan is known around the world as a region of unique and classical of mud volcanoes. Of the more than 2,000 known mud volcanoes on Earth, 344 are located in eastern Azerbaijan specilally near to the Caspian Sea. Most of the mud volcanoes are widespread in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, and some of them have been recognized as natural monuments. Azerbaijan can definitely be called the land of mud volcanoes, and these volcanoes are our national and natural wealth.

Mud volcanoes play the role of a cost-effective exploration well in the identification of oil and gas fields. In addition, clay from mud volcanoes is considered a mineral. Volcanic mud is also used successfully in the treatment of a number of diseases - diseases of the nervous system, skin and joints. At the same time, volcanoes are closely related to seismic events, so they are important in predicting earthquakes and similar events.






Absheron province. This region covers the peninsula of the same name and is the adjacent coastal zone of the Caspian Sea. Mud volcanoes are more widespread in the western and central parts of the province. Hokmali, Binagadi, Saray, Novkhani, Zigilpiri, Keyreki, Abix, Bog-boga, Boyukdash, Otman-Bozdaghi, Lokbatan, Shongar, Gushkhana and many other large volcanoes are located in the west and center of the province. There are mud volcanoes buried in Zykh and Bibiheybat areas in the province. Within the boundaries of the Absheron archipelago there are Buzovna Sopka, Mud Sopka, Neft Dashlari and other large mud volcanoes.







Baku archipelago province. This region covers the vast western part of the South Caspian Sea, which stretches from Cape Balykchi in the north to Gizilagaj Bay in the south. Mud volcanoes and cones of this region consist of an island (Bulla, Oblivnoy, Los, Svinoy, Glinyanny, etc.) or submarine numbers (Kornilov-Pavlov number, Pogorelaya Plate Reef, Golovachev number, etc.). The sea mud volcanoes of the Baku archipelago are arranged in a chain along the continuation of the anticline belts. A number of submarine numbers of mud volcano origin - Jupiter, 1906, 1933, Makarov and others - are located south of the Absheron Peninsula.
